Biography

Anna is a Research Fellow in the Evidence Synthesis Training and Research Group at the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Her current research involves undertaking different forms of evidence synthesis such as systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials, meta-syntheses and rapid reviews for policy. Anna works closely with colleagues within the University, in particular the Mother and Infant Research Unit. In addition Anna is also passionate about teaching research methods and is involved in the provision of postgraduate teaching for MSc and PhD students.

Anna originally trained in Medicine and undertook a BMSc in Medical Psychology. She received her PhD in 2014 from the University of St Andrews for work evaluating programmes for the prevention of violence in adolescents living in Scotland. Following this Anna continued to work at St Andrews as Post-doctoral Researcher in the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for International Child and Adolescent Health Policy and the Public Health Group at the University of St Andrews.

Since coming to Dundee, Anna has developed an interest in developing evidence synthesis for policy. This involves developing novel methods for efficient evidence reviews and she has actively contributed to a number of projects which have direct policy implications including: conduction of evidence reviews to inform the Scottish Government’s Review of Maternity and Neonatal Services; conduction of Cochrane reviews on interventions for Breastfeeding Initiation and Support to inform the World Health Organization’s guideline development group on nutrition actions; and conduction of evidence reviews to inform the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Educational Standards for Midwifery.

Research

Anna is experienced in different forms of evidence synthesis for quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods data, and has conducted reviews for a range of organisations including the World Health Organization, Scottish Government, Nursing and Midwifery Council, Department of Health, Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats and the Cochrane Collaboration.

Current and recently completed projects include:

  • A series of evidence reviews to inform the NMC’s development of Educational Standards
  • A systematic review on breastfeeding counselling interventions for WHO
  • Rapid Evidence Synthesis on policy research into midwifery skills education for the World Health Organization
  • Keeping Secrets Online
  • Teenage pregnancy rates among Looked After Young People and care leavers in the United Kingdom and other very high Human Development Index countries compared with their non-looked after peers: a systematic review
  • Enhancing Gypsy/Travellers’ trust: using maternity and early years’ health services and dental health services as exemplars of mainstream service provision
  • The Scottish Government’s review of maternity and neonatal services. This involves a series of rapid reviews on maternity and neonatal care. Due to contractual status I was unable to be PI on this project, however, I was responsible for the day to day project management.
  • A suite of reviews on breastfeeding support, education and initiation for the WHO. This includes two Cochrane reviews and one non-Cochrane review (CoI).

Wider professional activities

Within the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Anna has a number of other roles including:

  • Depute Chair of School of Nursing and Health Sciences Equality and Diversity Group
  • Athena Swan Self-Assessment Group member for Clinical Schools
  • Depute impact champion within the School of Nursing and Health Sciences
  • Responsible for the co-ordination of the LTC group PhD applications

Anna is a peer reviewer for a number of journals including Systematic Reviews. In addition she peer reviews grant applications submitted to the ESRC and final reports submitted to the NIHR.

Teaching

Anna is part of the Research for Practice module team for the MSc in Nursing and Health. She also supervises MSc students undertaking dissertations in evidence synthesis and PhD students.
